What is The Realignment?
This is a Substack newsletter based on the dramatic changes in voting habits and electoral volatility in the UK (and in much of the West). We argue that too much political commentary and too much of British politics is ignoring the factors behind this realignment and carrying on as normal. The newsletter analyses the forces behind the realignment, what a realigned politics and policy might look like and how political parties are failing to grasp the factors behind the realignment. About David Skelton
I was one of the first political commentators and thinkers to identify the potential for realignment. Tim Shipman described me as “a bold and original thinker, who gets it” and that I was “talking about levelling up and the potential for a Conservative breakthrough with the abandoned working class long before either was a glint in Boris Johnson’s eye.” According to Jon Cruddas, “Skelton has been a political pioneer in his attempts to develop a distinct ‘blue-collar’ conservatism… I don’t know if the Tories will listen to and embrace Skelton’s ideas, but if they do, my party should really start to worry.” The New Statesman described me as “one of our most prescient and empathetic social and political writers.” I’ve written two books about the realignment - Little Platoons and The New Snobbery and I’m determined that the issues that led to a temporary realignment aren’t again marginalised or forgotten.

If you’re interested in British politics, I think that you’ll find my takes interesting. And preparing these newsletters takes time, so I’d love it if you’d consider becoming a paid subscriber, especially as I’ve set subscription rates at a reasonable (some would say a ludicrously low) level.
